The environmental impact of plastics has been of great interest for several decades. Since plastics have become ubiquitous, the questions of responsible production, use, recycling, and disposal are relevant to many. This book strives to present the facts in a dispassionate manner; 17 chapters written by 14 different authors examine the title topic. The first section leads off with three chapters that help to set the stage: "An Environmental Primer," "Common Plastic Materials," and "Polymers and Energy." The second section explores several major applications of plastics with environmental implications: packaging, coatings, textiles, and agricultural film use. The third section explores the behavior of plastics in some environments where they are typically used, such as outdoors, in water, or in fires. The last section consists of chapters on recycling and thermal destruction of waste plastics. The authors tend to use a quantitative approach, and the facts are generally up-to-date. Diagrams illustrate processes in an easy-to-understand manner. There are many references; the writing style is intended for people who are not experts in the field, and it is easy to follow.
