Reviews 1

School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 2-This interactive beginning reader (Capstone, 2004) by B. A. Hoena has very few bells and whistles, but it features large typeface and colorful pictures. This first visit to a library reveals many wonderful things from the eyes of a preschooler: meeting the librarian, seeing rows of books and other library materials, using computers, attending story times, and checking out books to take home. Images from the book take up the majority of the screen with navigation controls visible. Each page is displayed as a male narrator slowly reads the text; each word is highlighted in yellow as it is spoken. Navigational controls on the bottom quarter of the screen allow the reader to move through the book, advance or back up a page, pause or resume reading, and jump to a given part of the book. The sound and highlighting can be turned off or on. These controls allow readers to proceed at their own pace. This program can be used by individual students or projected onto a screen for an entire class. A worthwhile tool for teachers and librarians.-Stephanie Bange, Wilmington-Stroop Branch, Dayton Metro Library, OH (c) Copyright 2010.
