Summary

Summary

Django Reinhardt = Genius. This album? No exception. DOUCE AMBIANCE is a collection of sides by Django's late-1940s ensembles Souvenirs De Django Reinhardt and Le Quintette du Hot Club de France (a later incarnation; not the one with Stephane Grappelli). Each ensemble features a line-up of twin guitars, clarinet, bass, and drums, and the intimate, acoustic feel of these recordings allows the true brilliance of the instrumentalists (especially Reinhardt) to shine. The music is fun, dazzling, nostalgic, slightly dirty, and the whole thing swings like a monkey on a vine. The compilation features many of Reinhardt's best-known tunes, including the atmospheric "Nuages" and "Swing 39," with its insanely frantic bounce. Two compositions were co-written with the great Stephane Grappelli, the slinky title track and all-time classic "Minor Swing." As a stylist, Reinhardt seems omnipotent, segueing seamlessly from slow, space-filled, soulful leads to blistering, advanced bop (he plays the melody of "Babik," for example, with superhuman speed). There are mountains of Reinhardt compilations on the market, but DOUCE AMBIANCE is a fine choice for bringing the magic Reinhardt's fingers make into your life.
