Summary

Summary

More entries on significant persons, places and events are now included, amplified by annexes and tables. There is a thorough introduction that gives the reader general background, and a chronology to provide a visual map of events. Finally, the bibliography's extensive listings provide valuable sources of further information.

Reviews 1

Choice Review

Although Malaysia has one of Southeast Asia's more vibrant economies, information about it is scarce. This work therefore stands as an important contribution to the study of a country that is ethnically diverse and rich in resources. Entries are balanced and provide concise information, but the emphasis in choice of entries is unfortunate. Entries for ethnic groups, languages, and literature have been neglected in favor of social and political terms and events; although the compiler provides entries for all the political parties and for prominent political figures, there are none for authors, literary organizations, music, or dance. A chronology, register of sultans and cabinet officials, list of ethnic groups, and population and general economic statistics make this a handy reference source for novices and experts alike. The 104-page bibliography updates Ian Brown and R. Ampalavanar's Malaysia (CH, Dec'86) and is an essential guide to recent scholarly literature. Malaysia is the fifth Southeast Asian country to appear in this series, raising hopes there will be more. Upper-division undergraduate; graduate; faculty. C. L.
