Summary

Summary

A Choice "Best Academic" book in its first edition, The Recorder remains an essential resource for anyone who wants to know about this instrument. This new edition is thoroughly redone, takes account of the publishing activity of the years since its first publication, and still follows the original organization.

Choice Review

The first edition (CH, Apr'95) was selected as a Choice Outstanding Title; the second edition deserves the same high regard. Some 700 new entries bring coverage of the literature to 2002. The book is organized like the first edition, though some sections are now arranged chronologically rather than alphabetically. Two chapters, "Miscellaneous Fipple Flutes" and "Recorder, Early Music, and Musical Instrument Periodicals," have been dropped, as have all appendixes except the list of "Communications" in FoMRHI Quarterly (Fellowship of Makers and Researchers of Historical Instruments). Other chapters have expanded to accommodate new areas of research. One handy new feature is the addition of birth and death dates to headings for people's names. Coverage of English-language scholarship remains uniquely comprehensive. ^BSumming Up: Essential--large music collections. Highly recommended--all collections. M. D. Jenkins II Wright State University
