Summary

It's Memorial Day and Marco and Mama are going to see the parade. On their way, they pass Marco's grandfather's house. They usually stop to see Grandfather, but today Mama is in a rush because she has promised Marco a surprise. Marco can't imagine what the surprise might be. Could it be the marching band? The fire engines? The candy tossed to the crowd by a woman dressed as the Statue of Liberty? Mama promises that it will be a better surprise than candy. As the parade goes by, Marco wisheshis grandfather were with him to enjoy it. Then, marching down the street, come the veterans, wearing uniforms and shiny medals. But look! Who is that leading them? Marco never imagined the kind of surprise in store for him.

School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 3-In this colorful picture book, a mother and son attend a Memorial Day Parade in an urban setting. Mama promises Marco that there will be "a very big surprise," creating a tone of anticipation. The excitement builds as they join the others lined up along the avenue. The author vividly describes the atmosphere of the celebration, and the boy guesses that each parade participant-from a marching band to firefighters on their truck-is the secret. His mother's response is always that the real surprise is even more special. Suddenly there is applause, and Marco sees his beloved Abuelo being pushed in his wheelchair at the front of a group of marching veterans. The boy then proudly says, "My grandfather is a hero." Artigas's bright illustrations feature enthusiastic characters with broad smiles. The paintings are filled with energy as American flags are waved, children ride bicycles with red and blue handlebar tassels, and balloons float through the air. This book depicts people from different ethnic backgrounds coming together to honor our American veterans. Marco's experience and his feelings of pride about his grandfather add a personal touch to understanding the holiday, and will launch discussions about relatives who have served their country in various ways.-Deborah Rothaug, Pasadena Elementary School, Plainview, NY (c) Copyright 2010.
