Choice Review

Churchland (philosophy, Univ. of California at San Diego) writes about neurophilosophy; she takes stock of various philosophical problems concerning the nature of the mind, given the recent developments in neuroscience and cognitive science. She has assembled the material into two classical categories--metaphysics and epistemology. Ethics is covered briefly in discussing free will and responsibility. Religion is the topic of the final chapter and is presented in both metaphysical and epistemological dimensions. The overall theme is that if one allows discoveries in neuroscience and cognitive science to confront old philosophical problems, something remarkable happens. Genuine progress is being made where previously progress seemed impossible; intuitions are surprised and dogmas challenged. One can now make sense of mental phenomena in neurobiological terms while unmasking some of the classical puzzles as preneuroscientific misconceptions. Neuroscience has begun to impact philosophical problems, such as the mind-brain phenomenon, discussed throughout.
