Booklist Review

Alexis Lichine's classic reference book on the world of wines and liquors has undergone another revision to bring it as up-to-date as possible. Introductory essays on wine history and science give the novice a useful place to begin understanding wine's fundamental nature and significance. Individual entries amplify the basics and provide detailed information on wine varieties and specific vineyards. Significantly, the data on liquors may prove even more useful to the librarian. For example, the article on rum not only covers the distillation process, but also lists in separate entries the characteristic production of individual nations. While this new edition contains revised maps, the illustrative material can't begin to match the text's superiority. A basic selection for all wine-and-spirits reference collections.
