Editors Trigg (Crucial Experiments in Modern Physics) and the late Lerner (Development of Multi-Coordinate Vocabulary: Plasma Physics) return as coeditors of this encyclopedia, which has been extensively expanded. More than 500 entries have been added or updated by just as many experts and cover the terminology and techniques of classical and modern physics. These A-to-Z entries range in length from one to five pages and contain bibliographies, references, and cross references to guide the reader to more detailed information. Volume 1 includes entries on alloys, crystal defects, error analysis, and laser cooling; Volume 2 covers such topics as masers, polymers, thin films, and whiskers. Compared with other multivolume works like Wiley's 23-volume Encyclopedia of Applied Physics (2004), also edited by Trigg, and Macmillan Encyclopedia of Physics (1996), this clearly written yet concise set offers an excellent starting point for researchers unfamiliar with a topic. While the four-volume Macmillan features more textual and descriptive information with fewer bibliographic references in entries, Trigg and Lerner's work contains more mathematical details and figures. The language in Macmillan is slightly more accessible to nonscientists, but the two titles would complement each other on the reference shelf, as there is a significant overlap of entries. Wiley's more extensive Encyclopedia of Applied Physics could supplement the other two titles in a large academic research library. Bottom Line The only potential disadvantage to owning this Wiley encyclopedia is that no online access is available. Choice Review

The third edition of the Encyclopedia of Physics is a welcome revision of the previous edition, published in 1991. The two-volume format is a little easier to use and the inclusion of almost 3,000 pages (compared to the previous edition with fewer than 1,500 pages) implies an addition of significant material. The revision, however, is less extensive than it appears. Only 17 of the more than 500 articles are new. Some areas of physics have not changed; accordingly some articles are exactly the same, and others have had only their bibliographies updated. Other articles have been substantially revised. The list of over 600 contributors is impressive, and includes some Nobel laureates and many experts well known in their fields. The index and cross-references are helpful. The illustrations are adequate, although none are in color. This edition is likely to be well used, as was the case with previous editions. Smaller libraries or those on tight budgets may want to skip this edition if they have the previous one, and rely on other sources for the newest physics advances.
