Summary

Summary

A ghost horse that warns ships away from the reefs. A haunted painting that won't be moved. A body of bones that doesn't want to stay in its grave. A sea captain with a hook for a hand who still walks the beaches of California a hundred years after he died. Here are four ghost stories from around the country about real people and true events.

Booklist Review

Gr. 2-3. Newly independent readers are in for a mix of chills and giggles from this volume in the Step into Reading series. Head notes identifying a place and date preface each true ghost tale, which is accompanied by photos and static but not wooden painted scenes. Haskins relate tales of a Cape Cod ghost horse that leads ships away from danger; a portrait that protests being moved from its original place in Virginia's Shirley Plantation museum; the hilarious career of a Colorado miner who continued looking for love even after his bones were dumped down an outhouse hole; and a one-handed California sea captain whose ghost is still said to prowl Stinson Beach. Haskins invites readers to make up their own minds about the truth in these stories, properly cautioning at the outset that they mix history with legend. An inviting gateway to Daniel Cohen's eerie collections. --John Peters Copyright 2003 Booklist
