Although many consumer health guides advise readers about the pros and cons of supplements, this is the only one that evaluates the ingredients in specific brands, drawing on the findings of ConsumerLab.com, an independent testing company known as the watchdog of the supplement industry. It argues that one out of every four supplements is defective, e.g., it contains more or less (sometimes considerably less) of the main ingredient than the label indicates. After introductory material on government regulations, other problems with supplements, and some potential dangers of herbs, the book presents product reviews of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other supplements and lists of brands that have passed testing; those brands that flunked are unfortunately absent (that information is available to subscribers on the company's web site, www.consumerlab. com). The testing methods and standards listed in the appendix appear to be sound.
