Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer face a frightening and confusing time, as they must confront looming concerns such as understanding the physiology of their disease, treatment options, and the choices that can increase their chances of survival. Too often, however, patients are not adequately educated about breast cancer, leaving them with countless questions regarding their health and medical care. This edifying and reassuring guide ends the uncertainty by answering the one hundred most frequently asked questions by breast cancer patients, and includes sections on medical terminology, support groups and resource centers, cancer medication, and alternative medicine. Charyn Pfeuffer's experience as a breast cancer researcher and volunteer put her on the front lines with thousands of women urgently seeking advice and support. To further respond to the most pressing needs of newly diagnosed women, Pfeuffer has consulted with both alternative and traditional health-care practitioners to lead patients from detection to treatment. Pfeuffer provides a starting point for women to navigate through the myriad options and resources available for support and treatment of breast cancer.

Reviews 1

Library Journal Review

Journalist Pfeuffer puts forth information so women can "evaluate all of their treatment options, both conventional and complementary free of medical jargon." The text is presented in four parts, subdivided by specific categories. Part 1 is literally 100 questions with answers (What is breast cancer? to Where do I go now for more information?), enhanced with boxes of facts, lists, and resources. Part 2 discusses complementary therapies, with Parts 2 and 3 offering a pharmacopoeia and resource section, respectively. There are numerous informational guides to breast cancer on the market, but this one is accessible and affordable. Pfeuffer's tone is comforting and collegial. Recommended. (c) Copyright 2010.
