Library Journal Review

This is an updated and retitled edition of Daniels's 1995 book, DC Comics: Sixty Years of the World's Favorite Comic Book Heroes, sporting a new cover by painter Alex Ross and featuring 16 additional pages covering recent developments. It's an extensive and well-researched history of the company from its origins in 1935 to the present, covering characters and comics both major and minor along with cartoons, TV shows, movies, toys, and other spin-off projects and products. A plethora of well-chosen color and black-and-white illustrations make the book fun coffee-table browsing-and the commentary by Daniels (author of several other comics histories, including a similar book on Marvel Comics) is no mere add-on. He includes many quotes from key figures in DC's history, such as Batman creator Bob Kane. Daniels is not afraid to turn a critical eye to DC's lesser work-and he's also not above making a few playful jabs in photo captions ("Aquaman, a hero with a sense of porpoise"). Libraries where the earlier edition is popular may want to update; for those without the earlier book, this new edition is highly recommended. (c) Copyright 2010.
