Booklist Review

Like the numerous biographies of Madonna that have appeared recently, this one covers the usual territory: Madonna as a young child who lost her mother; as an unruly stepdaughter; as a struggling performer-cum-nude-model; and, of course, as a megastar. Bego, the author of workmanlike biographies of such stars as Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson, goes beyond a cut-and-paste job this time--the interviews with Madonna's friends are a plus-- but his enthusiasm at times seems a little over the top: "There has never been a popular singer who has so totally captured the ears and eyes of the world and who uses her power to make changes in our consciousness." Ever hear of the Beatles, Mark? For libraries needing to expand (or begin) their Madonna collection, this is a serviceable choice. ~--Ilene Cooper
