In a lighthearted look at the power of imagination two lively pups spend a busy day playing ""make believe."" Proclaiming themselves kings of the meadow, Rufus and Max dress up in regal clothes and scratch the outline of a castle on the ground. But the other animals don't see how special the castle is - in fact, they don't see it at all! In despair, the pups nearly abandon their dream, but happily, optimism and their irrepressible imaginations triumph.

School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 2-Two best friends decide to leave their doghouse behind and build a castle. The pups draw the outline of an elaborate building on the ground, complete with towers, windows, and doors, and declare themselves kings of the meadow. Excited about their game, they try to involve their farmyard and forest friends in the imaginary fun, but with no luck. At first disappointed, the two dogs finally realize that they have only to please themselves and enjoy a busy afternoon. Filled with textured brush strokes and vibrant colors, the lighthearted paintings enhance the rather simple but endearing story. The animal characters, drawn with perfectly exaggerated lines, are charming. The illustrator plays interestingly with perspective, and the overall effect is delightful.-Shelley B.
