Booklist Review

This exhibition catalog documents the American stage director's work both visually and aurally, via an enclosed CD of a musical score by Hans Peter Kuhn. The many dimensions of Wilson's art, which goes far beyond what is generally accepted to be the directorial realm, engages both images and movement of actors and dancers to suggest a dramatic vision of symbolic action that typifies Wilson's approach in his own theater pieces and in his stagings of other artists' works. This volume replicates some of those striking stage pictures in both sketches and in photographs of productions that were created with some of Wilson's notable collaborators, including Phillip Glass and Heiner Muller. In addition to Fairbrother's text, contributions by writer William Burroughs, critic Susan Sontag, and artist Richard Serra expand on Wilson's idea of theater. Chronological essay on Wilson's productions and bibliography. ~--John Brosnahan
