The Facts On File dictionaries of Atomic and Nuclear Physics, Biochemistry, and Cell and Molecular Biology are part of the 15-volume Facts On File Science Dictionaries set. Written in clear, easy-to-understand language, basic terminology and concepts are covered in entries that range in length from one sentence to several paragraphs. The Dictionary of Atomic and Nuclear Physics covers areas such as atomic theory, the structure of matter, spectroscopy, quantum theory, nuclear physics, particle physics, and cosmology. Examples of specific entries are Bohr model; Carbon dating; Grand unified theories (GUTs); Hadron; Hawking, Stephen William; Rydberg constant; and Self-organization. Appendixes provide tables of fundamental constants, elementary particles, chemical elements, and a selected list of organizational Web pages. General areas included in the Dictionary of Biochemistry are basic organic and physical chemistry, classes of compounds, cytology and histology, nutrition and metabolism, and natural-product chemistry. Examples of specific entries are Beta-pleated sheet; Cyanobacteria; Enzyme; G protein; Guanine; Isomerase; McClintock, Barbara; Pollution; Sex determination; Sugar; Vector; and Zeolite. Designed in part as a resource for high school Advanced Placement Biology, this dictionary includes terms and concepts of importance to the entire field of cell and molecular biology. The definitions for such terms as "apoplast," "ion channel," "motif," "photorespiration," and "trophoblast" range from a single sentence to several paragraphs and often include clarifying examples. Cross-references are frequent. Biographical entries and a small number of black-and-white line drawings are included. There are four appendixes--a chronology of major events, amino acids, the genetic code, a brief list of Web pages--and a short bibliography of basic textbooks. Although this book defines fewer terms than either The Dictionary of Cell and Molecular Biology, ed. by J.M. Lackie and J.A.T. Dow (3rd ed., 1999), or Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, ed. by A.D. Smith et al. (CH, Jul'98; rev. ed., 2000), the definitions it provides are often easier to understand. Hine, who has edited several other reference works in the life sciences, does a nice job using examples to clarify and explain terms and concepts. Summing Up: Recommended.
