Booklist Review

Changes, lessons, and lives come full circle in the conclusion of Moore's high-end soap opera, one of indie comics' greatest successes. Katchoo is relatively content with the life she has rebuilt, again, with David, Casey, and her art studio at its center. But David is terminally ill, which, when the others find out, galvanizes them into trying anything and everything to save his life. Meanwhile, Francine's marriage isn't panning out. Finally, she listens to her heart and heads back to Katchoo. Bookended by deaths, the last SiP volume's emotionally charged story line becomes more intense as inevitability closes in. David's death is no surprise (the death at the beginning is), but it has the involved reader bracing for the blow right along with Katchoo and Casey. Of course, inducing such engagement with heartbreakingly real characters has always been one of SiP's big strengths. Another, Moore's line work, remains flawless, rendering everything from humor to anguish so smoothly that the images seem to be moving. Moore wraps up with grace and style, but have the tissues handy!--Coleman, Tina Copyright 2007 Booklist
