Library Journal Review

Melville is best described as a knitting coach, at your side encouraging you to progress in your knitting, providing hints and tips, rescuing you when you make mistakes, and showing you not only how to knit but how to enjoy life while knitting. The Purl Stitch builds on her earlier The Knit Stitch but also stands alone; the first book is not a prerequisite. This volume includes 25 knitwear designs, expanding the garter-stitch repertoire of The Knit Stitch to stockinette stitch, reverse stockinette, ribbed patterns, and mixed knit and purl patterns in garments for women, men, and children. Right- and left-carry instructions for the purl stitch are illustrated with a succession of clear photographs. Melville also touches on the somewhat unusual technique of purling with the yarn tensioned around the knitter's neck. Advanced knitters will enjoy patterns like "Not Your Mother's Suit Coat." This book should find a home in all good knitting collections. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
