Choice Review

This statistical compendium includes information from federal government sources on a wide variety of topics for counties and cities and for states, metropolitan areas, and congressional districts, making the transition to 2000 census data and beyond. It includes data from the 2000 census short form and Census 2000 Supplementary Survey as well as some 2001 data (e.g., population estimates). It provides data for cities with a population of 25,000 or more in 2000. Data for less populous places is included in Places, Towns, and Townships (1993- ; 3rd ed., 2003). CC Extra excludes detailed socioeconomic data from the 2000 census long form (planned for inclusion in the 2003 edition) and some data collected on the short form (see County and City Extra, Special Decennial Edition, 2002). Besides its well-organized data tables, CC Extra includes a handy summary of area rankings on a variety of subjects and a set of presentation-quality data maps. CC Extra's content closely mirrors that of Statistical Abstract of the United States but provides data for much smaller geographic units. Several other Census Bureau titles (e.g., State and Metropolitan Area Data Book, 1979- and USA Counties, 1992- ) offer content similar to CC Extra but are less current. Until new editions of those titles are released, CC Extra is the first choice for compiled statistical information, especially at the substate level. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. All collections. B.
