Summary

Summary

Strategically located at the heart of south-central Asia, Afghanistan is a landlocked country, home to breathtaking landscapes and a diverse group of peoples. Throughout its long history, the country has been a battleground on which empires and armies have fought for regional control. From the violent sport of buzkashi to soaring, colorful kites, from the migratory Kochis to the resilient mujahedin guerrillas, and from the peaceful reign of Zahir Shah to the harsh but brief Taliban regime, this book showcases a nation seeking a stable future that is free from political oppression and war. School Library Journal Review

Gr 4-8-A well-organized title that fills the need for an up-to-date book on this country. Clearly written information on the geography, history, government, people, and culture of Afghanistan is illustrated with vibrant color photographs on almost every page. In addition to chapters echoing with now-familiar names and locations (mujahedin, Taliban, Kabul, and Mazar-e Sharif) and a particularly poignant chapter on the status of women in the country, there are special sections on such topics as games, clothing, and music. The alleged role that the country played in the September, 2001, terrorist attacks is handled with care in a section titled "Relations with North America." The book concludes with a colorful political map; a blank outline map; and separate glossaries of unfamiliar Arabic, Dari, Pashto, and English words.-Sue Morgan, Tom Kitayama Elementary School, Union City, CA (c) Copyright 2010.
