School Library Journal Review

Gr 3-5-Based on "Kit" of the "American Girl" series, this book is brimming with vitality and wholesomeness. The book opens with four pages about the child's life and the challenges faced by her family during the Depression. The following five sections contain recipes, crafts, and games that would have been familiar to girls of the 1930s. The 18 tempting dishes, each accompanied by a color photo, include waffles, chili, macaroni and cheese, glazed carrots, roast-beef hash, banana cake, and more. The 17 crafts include sewing projects, a puzzle, a lamp shade, and a mosaic-tile trivet. Eight outdoor and indoor games provide lots of entertainment. "Radio Night" encourages youngsters to write a script and produce sound effects. The excellent mix of full-color and black-and-white photos and illustrations shows children enjoying the activities and gives a glimpse of history as well. Safety concerns are indicated by an "adult help" symbol. Throughout the book, girls are connected to the past with brief historical data that is both informative and interesting. A fine addition to craft collections.-Augusta R. Malvagno, Queens Borough Public Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
