Choice Review

Wrigley (British history, Univ. of Nottingham) specializes in Winston Churchill and David Lloyd George. This series ("ABC-CLIO Biographical Companions") intends to provide encyclopedic guides to lives of men and women who have had significant impact on social, political, and cultural developments in the West. Wrigley expects "to give ready access to information about all aspects of Churchill's remarkable career and events and people with whom he was most closely associated." Arranged alphabetically, the entries are supplemented with familiar black-and-white illustrations of Churchill with other people and by a chronology of his life, an index, and a list of entries. The selected bibliography lacks annotations and cites many works about Churchill, but does not list his own. Most entries end with cross-references, and all have two to six bibliographic references. Unlike entries in subject dictionaries of British history or DNB, these entries relate Churchill to the subject; e.g., the entry "Bladon" (the parish church of Blenheim Palace) has no information about the church itself, but only that Churchill is buried there. Entries for minor relatives, particularly women, may be less easy to find in other biographical works. Most entries are biographical, but among the B's are topical entries for "Black and Tans," "Bermuda Conference," "Battle of Britain," "Boer War." Students who are required to ferret out details of correspondence between, e.g., Roosevelt and Churchill, by using reference sources will be disappointed by omissions in Wrigley's book: neither Mackenzie King (premier of Canada) nor Stanislaw Mikolajczyk (exiled premier of Poland) are included. Wrigley provides no information about how entries were chosen. The book's narrow scope fits it better to circulating collections than reference. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Undergraduates. A. H.
