Summary

Summary

The History Maker Bios series offers introductions to the lives of historical figures found in the core of every history curriculum. Filled with true stories, historical photographs, artwork, and caricatures, each title in this lively series will entertain and inform readers. From the moment Neil Armstrong's feet left the earth on his first plane ride, he knew he wanted to fly. Before becoming an astronaut, he worked nights at a bakery making 110 doughnuts per night! After becoming a pilot and joining the navy, Armstrong applied to join NASA as an astronaut. Following years of training, he was chosen to lead the United States' historic first mission to land on the Moon.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 2-5-This simple yet complete and interesting biography of the first man on the Moon includes the highlights of his life. Five sidebars-one per chapter-give further explanations of various references such as the Depression and the space race. Photos appear on nearly every page; most are in color. Relevant, whimsical drawings introduce each chapter. Don Brown's One Giant Leap: The Story of Neil Armstrong (Houghton, 1998) has no photos and looks more like a picture book. A solid addition to biography collections.-Kate Kohlbeck, Randall School, Waukesha, WI (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
