Rare Book Room 1848 edition : The volume is bound in brown morocco over boards, with the title stamped in gilt on a black levant label on the spine. The front bound endpaper bears the ownership note, "Miss Emeline Odell's Book, April 17, 1854." The frontispiece recto bears the note in pencil, "Property of C E Cummings From His Mother. Presented to Her By the author Abner Chase." The back cover recto bears a pasted-in newspaper clipping, "Thoughts suggested by the Erection of the Monument to the Rev. Abner Chase, by Mrs. S. A. Countryman," dated "Stamford, Ct., June 24, 1857."
