Summary

Summary

Allison Turk realized she'd been awake for twenty-four hours. She hadn't done that since college. It had been the most remarkable twenty-four hours of her life - hours in which, for better or worse, a choice had been made, a line crossed. There was no going back. Each time she thought about it, she felt the same strange shock: She was a straighttlaced civil engineer from Denver, huddled in the bowels of a broken-down cargo boat on the Wan Li Chang. Hunted by police, with her stepson and a baby that wasn't legally hers. With all that, she was not even heading toward Shanghai, toward home. Instead, she was heading upriver, deeper into the heart of china …

Library Journal Review

Six Americans travel to China to pick up their adoptive babies, but after a week with them are told of a clerical error that requires them to give up these babies in exchange for new ones. Three choose to run with the aid of their Chinese interpreter and guide, Yi Ling. One baby girl dies; terror and torture continue to reduce their number. Chinese officials had uncovered a conspiracy of corruption, blackmail, and murder they had hoped to conceal from the world press. This thriller, based on a true 1996 event, features an odyssey through southern China via truck bed, cycle, fishing boat, and foot to reach the U.S. Embassy in Shanghai. George Guidall's professional recording adds dimension to what could be stock characters. Highly recommended for public libraries.-Sandy Glover, West Linn P.L., OR (c) Copyright 2010.
