1872 edition : The volume is bound in brown pebbled cloth over boards, with elaborate border and center designs blindstamped on both covers, and with the cover title stamped in gilt within the front cover center design. The spine has been repaired with brown fabric. The front free endpaper bears a customized ownership note in gilt Gothic lettering, "Fred J. Shepard." The front bound endpaper bears in its upper left corner the engraved bookseller's stamp in blue ink, "B. Westermann & Co., 524 Broadway, New-York." The volume is further protected by a dustjacket of plain brown paper.
