Summary

Summary

In this unique work some of today's greatest educators present concise, accessible summaries of the great educators of the past. Covering a time-span from 500 BC to the early twentieth century each essay gives key biographical information, an outline of the individual's principal achievements and activities, an assessment of their impact and influence, a list of their major writings and suggested further reading. Together with Fifty Modern Thinkers on Education, this book provides a unique reference guide for all students of education.

Choice Review

This volume, edited by Palmer, is part of the Routledge series of "Key Guides." It provides brief biographies and critical assessments of the thinking and practice of 50 of the greatest educational thinkers of the past 2,500 years. Typically, entries for each of these "greats" in the field of educational thought and practice are four to five pages in length, and in toto they cover a span from Confucius to John Dewey and Bertrand Russell. Essentially, each essay provides basic biographical information, an overview of the subject's contribution to educational thought and practice, and a brief critical reflection on his or her thinking and influence. In the style of the Encyclopedia Britannica, this volume is a quick reference that might lead interested readers to more extensive and detailed study. One could take issue with who is included or excluded from this listing, asking, for example, whether Paulo Freire's credentials outshine those of Cyril Burt. Such an exercise would ultimately prove pointless. The editors have made their selection using a broad-based definition of education and educators and have had to live within the limitations imposed by the number 50. Recommended at all levels. R. J. Reynolds Eastern Connecticut State University
