Library Journal Review

Even the most experienced plein-air artist will, at times, benefit from encyclopedic photo collections like this one as well as Rulon's Artist's Photo Reference: Birds and Gary Greene's Artist's Photo Reference Guide to Flowers and Artist's Photo Reference: Buildings & Barns. Here, hundreds of photos cover crashing waves, tide pools, streams, lakes, marshes, snow, ice, frost, sunrises and sunsets, fog and mist, and storms. The book begins with a good session on how artists can take their own reference photos. Moreover, Rulon includes six step-by-step demonstrations by a variety of artists painting from photos in the book. Rulon, a highly successful wildlife and landscape artist, lives on Whidbey Island in Washington's Puget Sound, surrounded by constantly changing waters and skies.
