Summary

Summary

This edition profiles 60 top-rated US cities with populations between 25,000 and 99,999, all new to this iteration and selected by different criteria from the 1995 edition. Chapters on each of the cities covered from Ballwin, MO to Woodbury, MN begin with page-long background narratives (history, interesting trivia, etc.), then provide details on the respective city's ranking on various measures, and a plethora of variables relating to its business and living environment. Newly featured are data tables on housing permits, home ownership rates, tax audit rates, bankruptcy rates, presidential election results, EPA superfund sites, and watershed health. Appendices list metropolitan statistical areas, counties, chambers of commerce, state departments of labor, and new to this edition, comparative statistics. Annotation c. Reviews 2

Booklist Review

In previous editions of this work, selection was limited to cities defined as the primary or secondary city in a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). For this edition the MSA requirement has been dropped. The result was a broader base of cities with populations between 25,000 and 99,000 from which to choose, and all 60 cities profiled here are new from the last edition. They include Danbury, Connecticut; Hoover, Alabama; Redmond, Washington; and White Plains, New York. Several new statistical tables and appendixes have been added.

Library Journal Review

This handbook provides current, comprehensive statistical information for 60 smaller U.S. cities (population 25,000-99,000) in one easy-to-use source, giving readers concise social, business, economic, demographic, and environmental profiles at a glance. The text is arranged alphabetically by city, with each entry including tables in over 50 categories. This handbook began with 1996-97 and is now in its fourth edition, but the 2002-03 edition is different in two very important ways: all 60 cities are new to this edition, and the criteria used to select them have changed. Here, the city does not have to be in a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which allowed for a much broader base. Cities were then selected through the consistent use of four key criteria: income, crime rate, unemployment rate, and national statistics available on population growth. Seven brand-new tables cover home ownership, bankruptcy, and more. Appendixes include MSAs, Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Organizations information, and data from State Departments of Labor and Employment; a new appendix compares all 60 cities in over 60 categories. This work will appeal to private individuals or businesses considering relocation, professionals considering expanding their business or changing careers, or just readers searching for reliable statistical data.
