Booklist Review

As World War I rages, Julia, the seventeen-year-old daughter of Jenny Allington of The Rose Arch [BKL S 15 01] and A Cornish Rose [BKL F 15 02] falls for amnesiac war hero Charles Hamilton. They soon marry, and Charles gradually regains his memories, but he is experiencing horrible nightmares, mood swings, and intense headaches. Already pregnant, Julia is dismayed to discover that he had been married previously and that his first wife died under suspicious circumstances. Soon it seems that someone is trying to kill her. Could it be her cold mother-in-law, or a female friend of Charles, or perhaps even Charles himself, who flung her to the ground when experiencing a fit? With an excellent flair for the gothic, Sole makes the reader suspect almost everyone at Rondebush, the Hamilton's beautiful historical estate. Even though this is the third in the Rose Saga, it stands perfectly well on its own, providing a delectable old-fashioned tale of romantic suspense. Readers who crave the classy joys and chills of Victoria Holt and Mary Stewart will be delighted with Sole. --Diana Tixier Herald
