Reviews 2

Booklist Review

The highly visual books in the DK findout! series are eye-catching and fact rich. The illustrations are the focal point of every page and include an array of artifacts, period artwork, photos, digital artwork and infographics, and reenactor-like pictures of historical scenes. Each comprehensive volume conveys information through short paragraphs, captions, fast facts, and brief interviews both real (with subject experts) and imagined (with a historic figure). A time line runs along the end papers and a preliminary quiz lets readers test their knowledge before diving into the main text. Ancient Egypt contains helpful depictions of social structure and famous pharaohs, but readers will likely find the spreads on beauty and medicine especially fascinating. The enticing format of this series is busy without being overstuffed, making it ideal for browsing or luring in reluctant readers.--Smith, Julia Copyright 2017 Booklist

School Library Journal Review

Gr 4-7-- Two more books in this series that continues to dazzle the eye with hundreds of color photographs and illustrations. Each two-page spread treats one particular aspect of the civilization, such as architecture, religion, agriculture, or recreational activities. All items pictured are identified with brief captions and clear definitions. Most are of excavated artifacts, but when these would not suffice to demonstrate visually some aspect of the culture, drawings or modern reconstructions are used. Striking examples include the reconstructioned Roman helmet, breastplate, and legionary's field pack. However, it's unfortunate that there are no timelines to help readers grasp the historical period. Similar books have been produced before, but seldom with the kind of stunning visuals provided here. Browsing through these books is second only to seeing the articles attractively displayed in a museum. --David N. Pauli, Missoula Public Library, MT (c) Copyright 2010.
