Booklist Review

PreS-Gr. 1. Coauthored and popularized by singing cowboy Gene Autry, «Here Comes Santa Claus» becomes the text of this seasonal picture book. The rhyme jingles along agreeably, and the detailed, double-page illustrations follow two story lines that eventually converge. The first begins as Santa and his helpers prepare his sleigh for takeoff, not realizing that a white puppy is stowing away in a sack of toys. Meanwhile a little boy named Matthew and his parents listen to carolers, hang their stockings, and prepare for bed. Santa finds the little dog before he arrives at Matthew's house and reads his note requesting a puppy. Santa leaves, the puppy stays, and Matthew awakens to find his wish granted. The complete words and piano music, along with guitar chords, appear on the endpapers. The soft-edged realism and deep, rich colors of the artwork give the pages an appealing look, and the cover, featuring a close-up of Santa and the puppy, is a natural for holiday displays. Carolyn Phelan.

Publisher's Weekly Review

Whatley (Elvis Presley's The First Noel) gussies up the singing cowboy's bouncy classic. Complementing the familiar lyrics, the visual story tells of a boy whose note to Santa explains that he "already asked for a genuine cowboy hat" for Christmas but really wants a puppy. Fortunately, as jolly old Saint Nick heads "right down Santa Claus lane," it appears he has a stowaway who fits the bill. Interesting perspectives include an aerial view looking down on the reindeer-borne sleigh. Music and lyrics are included on the endpapers. Ages 3-up. (Oct.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 1-Written in 1947 when Autry heard children repeat the title phrase at a Christmas parade, this song is still popular today. Whatley makes it even more inviting with his realistic, full-color paintings that include an endearing visual subtext that dovetails with the lyrics. As readers follow a family through Christmas Eve, a puppy stows away on Santa's sleigh and ends up as a much-wished-for gift. This story-within-a-story adds another layer of meaning to the words. The score and all of the verses appear on the endpapers. Great for storytimes or for one-on-one sharing.-M. W. (c) Copyright 2010.
