Twain's article, The Californian's tale, by Samuel L. Clemens, is signed "Mark Twain" and is tipped into v. 1; it originally appeared in the Authors Club Liber Scriptorum; this copy trimmed and illuminated with colored pictorial initial, head-pieces and tail-piece.

Anna Katherine Green's The Leavenworth case appears in v. 9, p. 239-257, in an abridged version by the author.
