Booklist Review

Fans of McNeill's intrepid heroine Dee Carmichael will be disappointed to find her on the periphery of this otherwise enjoyable kaleidoscopic whodunit that bounces between Bombay and London in search of the answer to a decades-old mystery: was Sonya Richards murdered? Richards was part of a colorful group of British expatriates billeted in India during the "Swinging Sixties," and her untimely death remains unexplained, much to the chagrin of retired Bombay detective inspector Tommy Morrison. With age and infirmity thinning their numbers, the expats opt to go out in a blaze of glory by staging the "Last Bombay Cocktail Party" reunion. But someone in their midst is planning more than a trip down Memory Lane and sends Morrison a menacing, anonymous invitation, intimating that Richards' killer will be in attendance. With a nod to Agatha Christie, McNeill amasses a motley crew of misfits and malcontents, each with a dirty little secret: drug abuse and alcoholism; homosexuality and transvestitism; adultery and prostitution; and, yes, even murder. A riveting yarn with deliciously campy characters. --Carol Haggas
