Booklist Review

American Reference Books Annual (ARBA) has been in print since 1970. There is now an online version covering the years 1997^-2002. The obvious advantage of ARBA Online is currency. The ARBA annual volumes usually appear in April or May with reviews of sources published in the previous year. ARBA Online presently contains more than 10,000 reviews with 1,700 to 1,800 being added each year, or 150 to 200 reviews added each month. ARBA is attempting to provide more reviews of Web sites and databases. The publishers plan that in time the database will be as comprehensive for Web sites as for print resources. To accomplish this, a call for additional reviewers is prominently displayed on the Web site. The interface for the database offers basic and advance search options to search by keyword, title (not author), subject, and publisher. For the basic search, the exact words or phrase and all or any of the words are also options. This may give surprising results. For example, a search for Britannica Concise Encyclopedia with the parameters of exact phrase and all words results in no exact match but more than 1,200 titles that contain at least one of the search words. Searches by subject are difficult if the exact ARBA heading is unknown. To find reviews of world atlases, the heading "Geography and Travel Guides-Geography-General Works-Atlases-International" is required. A title search is a more efficient way to find the correct subject heading. The format of the online reviews is similar to the print volumes except the ISBN and the price appear at the end of the review, not in the citation. They are ranked by relevancy, but there is no description of the basis for relevancy. Citations may be sorted by author, publisher, year, title, or subject. Reviewers continue to be credited at the end of the review and may be searched by keyword, exact phrase, and all words, but there is no comprehensive list of reviewers, which print volumes include. As with any reference source produced both in print and online, there still are advantages to the print source. The useful table of contents, with topics subdivided and even sub-subdivided, is not replicated online. Since the price of ARBA Online begins at $150 with no limit on simultaneous users and the most recent print volume (2002) is $120, the online version may be the logical choice for many libraries.

Library Journal Review

This biographical encyclopedia covers athletes as far back as tennis pioneer Mary Outerbridge (b. 1852) and as recent as Sarah Hughes (b. 1985), the figure skater whose stunning come-from-behind win at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City captured viewers' hearts worldwide. Edelson, a former sports columnist and reporter, has chosen 153 athletes based on three criteria: "greatest athletes," "most significant trailblazers," and "diversity" (of sport, race, and time period). The articles engagingly summarize the athlete's career and usually narrate the most dramatic event in her career (e.g., Kerri Strug's landing on a broken ankle, Wilma Rudolph's triple Olympic gold, Brandi Chastain's winning soccer goal). Each article ends with two to five sources for further reading, and the book also includes a two-page general bibliography, a list of athletes by sports and by era, and an index. Unfortunately, the book has only 50 photographs, though it would have been useful to see pictures of all the athletes. Its closest competitor, Janet Woolum's Outstanding Women Athletes: Who They Are and How They Influenced Sports in America (2d ed. 1998), covers fewer athletes (86 vs. 153) but has photos of each. The articles are similar in writing interest and length (about two pages). Woolum includes an extensive section on history and useful appendixes listing winners in sports events over the years. Of course, Edelson includes more recent athletes, such as Hughes, track star Marion Jones, and bobsledder Vonetta Flowers. Libraries with Woolum's first edition, issued in 1992, should update it either with the second edition or with Edelson's title, either of which would fill the reference need in this area. Choice Review

For the mostly American women in this book, Edelson, a freelance writer, chose the best, the trailblazers, and a few other women in sports who are usually ignored. The entries, in alphabetical order, range in length from a column and a half to two or more pages. A brief list of citations for further reading (including Internet sites) follows each entry. Unfortunately, the author relies heavily on Joe Layden's Women in Sports (CH, Mar'98), not one of the better biographical resources on the subject. It is helpful to see more names of administrators, broadcasters, officials, and referees--categories often neglected or minimized--but the author usually chooses a single subject to represent the sport because, she claims, published biographical information is limited. Supplements include sections arranged by sport and by athlete's birth year, a selected bibliography, and a subject index. The bibliography cites some inadequate titles and omits several important resources. A supplemental title for most collections. M. C. Su Pennsylvania State University, Altoona Campus
