School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 2-Sammy loves to go fishing, an activity he used to share with his dad. But that was before the accident that confined his father to a wheelchair. Now the child enjoys gathering worms, casting, and waiting for that tug on the line all by himself. Each day he goes out and delights in the herons, dragonflies, water bugs, loons, etc., and yet, "All this he had shared with his dad, and Sammy missed having him at his side." Finally he expresses his feelings, inspiring his father to come out and try fishing with him. "They caught no fish and did not care. For the two fishermen, it was a magical time, a new beginning." The story is a bit purposeful, but the point is gently and sincerely made. The vibrant watercolors are sunny, and the illustrations of the water animals are lovely. A good choice on a topic not often covered for this age group.-Piper L. Nyman, Fairfield/Suisun Community Library, Fairfield, CA (c) Copyright 2010.
