Choice Review

Not a two-volume set, but two independent A-Z collections, these were designed to supplement the 2nd edition of The Oxford English Dictionary (1989). Future update volumes will be printed regularly as new work accumulates. When the 3rd edition is eventually published, these volumes can be discarded. Meanwhile, they make fascinating reading. They include not only new words ("squark") but also old words previously not cited in the OED ("spitzer"), additional senses for old words, new collections, and new phrases ("split time," "split-fingered fastball"). The work is printed as completed, so that the volumes are uneven. Volume 1 has only one entry for "U" (Unix) and none for "X," "Y," or "Z," but volume 2 contains about 300 "U" entries, 11 "X" entries, about 60 "Y" entries, and 40 "Z" entries. Each volume has approximately 3,000 entries and subsenses, and volume 2 includes a cumulative index that will be continued in future volumes. Work is of the high quality expected for the OED. Recommended for academic libraries because it will represent the only updating of the OED for many years to come.
