Summary

Summary

Covers 131 titles published in the last twenty years, from 1980 through 1999. Most of the works indexed are in English, although some titles in French and Spanish are included. Artists are listed alphabetically, with birth and death dates, nationality, media in which the artist worked, and a code referring to the bibliography of titles indexed. Variant spellings, pseudonyms, and alternate names appear in parentheses after the name, with cross references provided. Coverage is worldwide, and some titles have been included that are not strictly biographical, in order to provide coverage for lesser-known artists. The main volume, published in 1973, was selected as an outstanding reference source by a committee of the Reference and Adult Services Division of ALA.

Choice Review

Havlice's supplement to her original work (CH, Nov'73) indexes 131 works published since 1981, when the first supplement appeared. Most titles are in English, but a few are in Spanish or French. The format follows the original index and the first supplement. This supplement includes well-known artists, such as Canova, Courbet, Chagall, and Haring, whose biographies are found in six or more of the indexed titles, and numerous lesser-known artists who appear in only one. More female artists are included than in the original or first supplement. Alternate name spellings are included, as are noms de palette (e.g., Canaletto for Bernardo Bellotto and Giovanni Antonio Canal). This index will be useful only to libraries large enough to hold a good portion of the 131 titles indexed. The citations note only the titles of these works (neither volume nor page numbers), making it difficult to request the articles through interlibrary loan.
