Local Note:
First edition: 19.6 x 16.5 cm. The engraver's mark, "Ackerman's Lith.," is at the bottom of the title page. The volume is bound in brown morocco, with a central design incorporating the title, and with an elaborate border, stamped in gilt on the front cover; the back cover also has the central design stamped in gilt within a different blindstamped border. The spine has the title within a floral design stamped in gilt, now faded and somewhat frayed. The frontispiece is protected by a tissue sheet. The title page illustration incorporates the title, publisher and address in New York City, and engraver, and bears the note, "Presented to Mary Handel, July 5, 1852." The text includes several manuscript poems in English or German dated 1856-1861.
