First edition: 29.7 x 21.8 cm. The printer's imprint is absent. The pamphlet consists of four signatures of 16 pages each of machined paper, now somewhat brittle, in a tissue-paper wrapper with the original cover page (partly mutilated) affixed. The front cover has the title and an engraved portrait of Rev. Beecher. The text pages are profusely illustrated with engravings of the principals in the trial and of significant proceedings, some of them full-paged. The pamphlet is protected further by a portfolio of red cloth over boards, with two outer flaps, two inner flaps, and two pink silk ribbons to tie the portfolio shut; its spine has the half-title stamped in gilt on a brown morocco label.
