Summary

Summary

Carefully crafted for both Spanish and English audiences, this radiant bilingual collection (a follow-up to the highly successful De Colores and Diez Deditos) includes over twenty holiday songs and rhymes gathered from Spanish-speaking countries. The songs focus on holidays that specifically honor Latin American culture-Cinco de Mayo, Carnival, C sar Ch vez Day-as well as on familiar fiestas celebrated around the world-New Year's, Christmas, Halloween, Mother's Day, and more.

With simple music for piano, voice, and guitar; informative background notes placing each song in context; Spanish and English lyrics presented side by side; and colorful collage illustrations, children of all ages will delight in this joyous new collection by the award-winning team of Jos -Luis Orozco and Elisa Kleven.

Booklist Review

Gr 2^-4. Starting with "Los Meses del Ano" for January, and concluding with "Las Posadas," this collection of 21 songs provides at least one selection for each month. Some are clearly connected to specific dates, such as "Cinco de Mayo," while others are loosely linked, such as "The Quinceanera" for August. A preface introduces each song, explaining the customs and significance surrounding it and giving game and singing directions. Each piece features music and Spanish lyrics with additional verses and English translations. Although most are traditional songs, Orozco, a performer and songwriter, includes a few of his original songs and has "taken the liberty of adapting the lyrics to fit a particular celebration." An appended index sorts the collection by theme and type of song such as "call and response." Framed with vibrant borders, Kleven's detailed illustrations bubble with life and activity, inviting close examination. As with Orozco and Kleven's first two songbooks, this offers a spirited slice of Latin American culture. --Linda Perkins
