First edition: [A]-Z⁸ 2A-2O⁸; [1]-200 201-[312]; 20.9 x 13.3 cm. The printer's imprint is at the bottom of the title page. The volume is quarter-bound in tan levant over boards marbled in green, yellow, black, and red. The spine has the title, "BATES'S EXAMINATION," stamped in gilt on a black levant label; both covers are blank. The endpapers and flyleaves (one at each end) are of plain white paper, now somewhat foxed; the right front endpaper bears the signature in pencil, "S. H. Farrer," and the pencilled note in the same hand, "Presented to me by the Author." The title page has the full title, author, publisher/printer, date and place of publication, and the text of Philippians 4:8, and bears the signatures, "S. H. Farrer" in pencil, and "Mary F. Peirce" in black ink. The text pages are of plain white rag paper in very good condition. There is a table of contents on the very last page of text.
