First American edition: [A]-I²⁴ K-M²⁴; [1]-216 217-265+[22]p. of advertising; 20 x 13.8 cm. The printer's imprint is absent. The volume is bound in dark brown cloth in excellent condition, with a crown-of-thorns design blindstamped on both covers. The spine has the title, author, and publisher stamped in gilt, now darkened to copper. The endpapers are of plain yellow paper; the right front endpaper bears the ownership note in black ink, "H. M. Faustini (?), Plattsburgh [N.Y.], July 30, 1861," in its upper right corner; the owner's signature also appears at the top of p. [5]. The flyleaves (two each front and back) and the text pages are of plain white paper. The title page has the full title, author credits, publisher, and date and place of publication; its verso advertises other works by the author. There are 22 unpaginated pages of publisher's advertising after the last page of text.
