Booklist Review

Gr. 3^-5, younger with adult help. Similar in concept to Ross' books of crafts based on children's stories, songs, and fairy tales, this volume offers 21 ideas revolving around familiar nursery rhymes. Projects include a glove puppet of Mother Hubbard's dog, a car antenna spider for Miss Muffet, and an aluminum pie tin model of Old King Cole's crown. The clearly written directions and the cheerful ink-and-watercolor illustrations show items needed to complete the projects and each step of construction. Decorative borders and illustrations of the nursery rhymes brighten the pages as well. Librarians may want to dip into this book for preschool program ideas, and teachers will find many practical craft projects for the classroom. --Carolyn Phelan

School Library Journal Review

Gr 1-4-Using mostly found objects, recycled household materials, and basic craft supplies, children can create items relating to 21 well-known nursery rhymes. Activities include making a "Jack and Jill Party Hat," a "Runaway Dish and Spoon Puppet," and "Old King Cole's Crown." The level of difficulty varies and younger children will need some assistance. Each project has a clear list of materials needed and detailed instructions along with illustrative watercolor pictures. One must question the intended audience, as it's unlikely that children old enough to make the projects will be interested in the subject.-Genevieve Gallagher, Orange County Public Library, VA (c) Copyright 2010.
