Publisher's edition, 2nd (?) printing: [A]-I¹² K-W¹² X⁴; [1]-108 109-252 253-256; 18.1 x 11.2 cm. The printer's imprint, "BOSTON: E. LINCOLN, PRINTER," is at the bottom of the last text page (p. 256). The volume is bound in brown calf over boards, with the title on a maroon label and six parallel horizontal rules stamped in gold on the spine; the bottom left edge of the spine has been repaired with coarse stitching. The covers are blank; the left front cover is coming loose from the spine. The endpapers and flyleaves (one on each side) are of plain white laid paper of a different type (being of lighter color) from the laid paper of the text pages. Facing the title page the front flyleaf bears the signature in black ink, "Hannah Howard," and below it written in pencil, "My Mother. This was her Book, and came to me after her death. S. H. Farrer, 1866." The title page has the title, author, translator, publisher, and date and place of publication, and bears two signatures, "Sarah H. Farrer" in black ink, and "Mary Farrer Peirce" in dark blue ink. The title page verso is blank. The text contains a table of contents and an unattributed preface.
