First edition: 38.8 x 28.3 cm. The printer's imprint, "PRINTED BY COOK AND CO., 76, FLEET STREET, LONDON," is on p. [iv] of Vol. I, and on the title page verso and the bottom of the last text page of Vol. II. The volumes are bound in brown morocco over boards, with an elaborate design stamped in gilt on both covers which features a native plant of Scotland in each corner of a double-ruled border, a shield with two crossed swords on each side, and on the front cover the title, "THE CLANS," the volume number, and the royal arms of Scotland with the engraver's imprint, "KRONHEIM & SKIRVING, LONDON," at the bottom of the arms. The spine has the front cover title and five squares featuring a thisle at the center, all stamped in gilt. The endpapers are beautifully marbled in red, maroon, and white, and the leather borders of the inside covers are stamped in gilt in a thistle pattern; the left front endpaper of each volume bears an ownership card of the Buffalo Public Library dated 1897. The flyleaves and text pages are of plain white paper; all edges are gilt. The engraved frontispiece, different for each volume, depicts the arms of the major Scottish clans in full color; these have the printer's imprint, "C. Graf," and the other engravings add to the name the phrase, "Lith.[ographer] to Her Majesty." After the title page, Vol. I contains a page of dedication to Queen Victoria, while Vol. II has a list of subscribers to the work. Both volumes have an index of "persons, places, and principal matters." The section for each clan is separately paginated, and is prefaced by an extraordinary beautiful full-color engraving of a figure in that clan's traditional dress and tartan, with the names of the artist, lithographer, and printer at the bottom of the engraving. Vol. II contains 45 blank leaves after the last page of text.
