Booklist Review

Fire has nearly destroyed King Hal's capital, Morenia. His people are dying of hunger and the lung disease caused by the fire, and he must find the wherewithal to rebuild. His only option is to wed the very young, painfully shy, exceedingly homely princess of Liantine, who prefers solitude and painting to royal duties. Hal must do what is best for his country, so he journeys to Liantine with glassmaker Rani Trader, his true companion and an expert bargainer. She will help negotiate the princess' bride-price, which in turn will pay for the restoration of Morenia. The sticky part is that many Liantines are slave owners, and many of the slaves are children and Hal's people. The madness of politics and religion threatens to derail Hal's plan, but courageous Rani, eight giant spiders, and their caretaker--a young journeyman outcast from the spiderguild-- hold the key to Morenia's salvation. Only the Thousand Gods know the outcome in the third volume of the Glasswright's saga, a fast-paced adventure series featuring a passionate, heart-winning heroine. Paula Luedtke.
