On Order

Summary

Summary

Fire was discovered about 600,000 BC. Today, scientists are making strides in genetic engineering. Find out what happened in between in 1,000 Inventions and Discoveries. Fascinating stories and vivid photographs and illustrations tell the tales of the developments in technology and natural science that have shaped our world. Profiles of the famous (and not-so-famous) men and women who have had "Eureka!" moments, a running timeline which puts the inventions and discoveries in historical context, and feature boxes highlighting key topics make this chronologically ordered volume a must-have for school and home learning.

Author Notes

Roger Bridgman studied natural sciences at Cambridge University before working as a graphic designer. He then studied electronics and became a design engineer at Marconi. He was curator of communications at the Science Museum, during which he wrote DK's Eyewitness Electronics and Eyewitness Technology. The Smithsonian Institution is a center for research dedicated to public education, national service, and scholarship in the arts, sciences, and history.

Reviews 3

Booklist Review

DK applies its heavily visual approach to a chronological survey of inventions and discoveries, from stone tools and hand axes to self-cleaning glass. Most are covered in a brief paragraph of text, but some, such as the printing press and Einstein's theory of relativity, get a double-page spread.

Publisher's Weekly Review

Reading and 'riting and 'rithmetic combine in a trio of brain-teasing titles. From stone tools to the cotton gin to cloned sheep, 1000 Inventions & Discoveries by Roger Bridgman surveys life-changing breakthroughs. Starting in 3,000,000 B.C., the each chapter covers a distinct historical period, offering tightly constructed chunks of information alongside more in-depth explanations. A timeline along the bottom of each spread fills in details. The book is produced in association with the Smithsonian Institution. (Aug.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-9-Instantly recognizable as a DK production, this book contains numerous entries on a variety of scientific discoveries and inventions. Encyclopedic in style, it is profusely illustrated and attractive. Its graphics convey a lot of the information and help compensate for the brevity of the text. The topics are presented at a rate of approximately five per page; therefore, the treatments are rather superficial. A small number of them are better developed within separate boxes, while occasional longer entries go into more detail, covering two full pages. The arrangement is chronological, and some entries include cross-references to related areas. A running time line along the bottom of the pages lists historical and cultural events happening at the same time as the scientific events. This book is larger and includes more entries than typical "Eyewitness" titles, but provides generally less information per entry. It is, however, an enjoyable source that makes clear the chronological relationships among the major developments of scientific progress.-Jeffrey A.
