Booklist Review

Lady Olivia Marlowe flees London with her stepbrother, Jeremy, days before her arranged marriage. During their trip to New York, Olivia learns that Jeremy has accepted a position with handsome real estate magnate Adam Porterfield and that she must pretend she's a working-class gal in order to serve as a companion to Adam's mother. Olivia accepts the situation, but after a lifetime as a noble, her wit belies her subterfuge, causing Adam to take note. Although the enigmatic Olivia intrigues him, Adam does everything in his power not to act on his attraction. Olivia then discovers that she has a talent for designing dresses and is able to set up her own business. She and Adam also spend more time together and fall in love. But when Olivia's web of lies begins to unravel, she finds herself torn between her desire to prosper as an independent woman and her desire for a shared life with Adam. Hix's tale is captivating, and Olivia's independent ways are downright refreshing. Megan Kalan.
